HOW I CAN HELP

WHAT IS AN END OF LIFE DOULA?

As an end-of-life doula, I am a trained, non-medical companion for the dying and the people who love them, before, during, and after death.

Much as a birth doula stays close to a family while doctors and midwives do their work, I stay close while hospice and your care team do theirs. I don’t replace them. Hospice provides the medical care. I provide personalized emotional, spiritual, physical, and practical support.

Hospice nurses carry many families at once, and their visits are often brief. In those short windows, they share a great deal, and grief makes it hard to hold onto all the information you are given. By the time they are out the door, their instructions blur, and the questions form. I’m there to educate, support, and walk you through the care your loved one needs, as many times as it takes, so you can care for them with confidence instead of fear.

Sometimes that means sitting together to put wishes into words before they’re needed. Sometimes it means explaining what a change in breathing means, so it frightens you a little less. It might be helping a family say what they’ve been holding for years, or shaping the room so it feels like it belongs to the person living in it. And when the moment comes, I can stay through the death and into the quiet hours afterward.

None of this is mine to decide. The person at the center leads, with their beliefs, their people, and their way. My work is to help everyone beside them move through it with more understanding, more steadiness, and far less alone.

My work begins long before the bedside and continues well after. I help people plan ahead while they’re well, so their wishes are clear and their families aren’t left guessing. I offer grief support for the weeks and months that follow a death, and I connect families with trusted resources, from hospice and funeral homes to legal and practical help.

Not sure what kind of help you need? That’s exactly what a free 30-minute Comfort and Clarity Conversation is for. It gives you a quiet place to tell me what’s happening and what’s weighing on you most. Together we’ll sort through what you need right now. That might be working together, some guidance you can use today, or the name of someone who can help in ways I can’t.

The end of a life is one of the most intimate times a family will ever share, and the person beside you should feel like the right fit. Our call is also a chance for both of us to sense whether we belong together through this journey. If I’m not the right companion for you, I’ll gladly help you find someone who is. Either way, you’ll leave with a clear next step, and there’s never any pressure to sign up for anything.

Peace of Mind Planning, Level 1

A Guided Conversation. A Clear Path Forward.

Most of us would rather clean out the garage than talk about our own death. I understand. Even when we know these conversations matter, they can sit on the to-do list for years, quietly waiting. Peace of Mind Planning,  gives us a calm and private place to finally have them. Together, we’ll explore what matters most to you, find the words for your wishes, and begin shaping a clear path forward.

When you plan ahead, you give yourself the gift of time. Time to learn your options, ask your questions, and make choices that truly reflect you, without the pressure of a crisis bearing down. It also spares your family from making hurried decisions on one of the hardest days of their lives. I have watched loving families sit in a funeral home the morning after a death, exhausted and unsure, agreeing to things their person never would have wanted and spending money they didn’t need to spend. Planning now can protect them from that.

The roadmap we create isn’t only for you. It’s a gift to the people who love you. If a day comes when you can’t speak for yourself, your family and caregivers will have something steady to return to. They’ll hear your priorities in your own words, and they can move forward knowing they are honoring you.

That kind of clarity brings peace to everyone. You can rest knowing you’ve said what matters. And the people you love won’t be left lying awake, wondering whether they got it right.

What we’ll talk about

Together, we’ll gently explore:

  • What a good quality of life looks like to you, and what it means to feel truly cared for.
  • Who you want by your side, and whom you trust to speak for you if you can’t speak for yourself.
  • Your hopes and wishes for the time before, during, and after your death, including the funeral, memorial, and disposition choices you want written down.
  • How to begin putting those wishes on paper and sharing them, through an advance directive and your personal roadmap.
  • Which conversations still need to happen, whether with family, your doctors, or other professionals who can help.

What you’ll take home

When our work together is complete, you’ll have a written personal roadmap that holds your wishes, priorities, and next steps in one place. You can return to it, share it with the people you trust, and keep the important conversations going long after we’ve finished.

End-of-Life Doula Support

We have made birth into something we prepare for. We take the classes, pack the bag, write the plan, and gather our people. But when it comes to dying, most families are handed a hospital bed, a phone number, and a folder of pamphlets, and then left to figure out the rest at two in the morning.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Dying is one of the most human things we will ever do, and no one should have to do it feeling lost, rushed, or alone. As your end of life doula, I walk beside you and your family as an informed companion and advocate, before, during, and after death, so the time you have left can be shaped by love and intention rather than fear and confusion.

What this might look like

Every family is different, and my support is shaped around what you need. It may include:

  • Offering a calm and steady presence, listening deeply, and honoring your cultural, religious, and personal beliefs, whatever they may be.
  • Helping you put your wishes into words, clarify your preferences for care, and make sure your family and your medical team truly understand them.
  • Explaining what the dying process may look like, so the changes your family sees feel less frightening and more familiar.
  • Teaching caregivers gentle comfort measures, so they can care for their person with confidence instead of fear.
  • Creating legacy projects, such as letters, memory books, or recorded stories that carry your voice forward.
  • Offering respite, so an exhausted spouse can sleep, shower, or simply step outside and breathe, and helping with light household and practical tasks that keep life moving.
  • Planning the vigil, and sitting at the bedside in the final days and hours, working alongside your hospice team.
  • Staying present through the death and the hours afterward, helping your family say goodbye in their own way.
  • Offering early grief support and checking in with your family in the weeks that follow.
  • Connecting you with community services, support groups, and trusted professionals when you need more than I can offer.

What this doesn’t look like

A doula is not a replacement for hospice, and I will never step into a medical role. Hospice brings nurses, aides, social workers, and chaplains who manage pain and symptoms, oversee medications, arrange equipment, and provide clinical care. I am honored to work alongside them, never in their place.

As your doula, I don’t:

  • Take vital signs, give medications, provide wound care, or manage medical symptoms.
  • Offer medical advice, recommend treatments, or second-guess your healthcare team.
  • Replace your hospice nurse, social worker, chaplain, or any licensed caregiver.
  • Bring my own beliefs into your room or nudge you toward any particular medical choice.

When something clinical comes up, I’ll help you reach the right person on your care team quickly.

I’m also trained in clinical hypnosis and EFT. If those might help, we’ll talk about it openly, and I’ll always keep that work separate from my role as your doula.

Hospice cares for the body. I help care for everything that surrounds it: the family, the fears, the memories, and the meaning. Together, we make sure no one is carrying this alone.
